The
Tornado Dress

This garment embodies my commitment to sustainability and creative resourcefulness. Drawing from a commitment to mitigating textile waste, I diligently sought secondhand materials, sourcing them from the goodwill bins—an outlet for surplus from Goodwill. Originating from two discarded 100% silk shirts, this dress emerged from the transformative potential inherent in overlooked materials. Inspired by the soft, slinky texture of the material, I sought to create a garment reminiscent of the minimalist elegance of Helmut Lang's aesthetic. Through a process of dyeing, screen printing, and careful deconstruction, I crafted the foundation of this dress, leaving no remnants unused except for the shirt cuffs. The dramatic black train of the dress was fashioned from a secondhand 100% silk scarf, further accentuating the ethos of sustainability. The conceptual framework of this design revolves around the raw power and dynamism of a tornado. Drawing inspiration from the awe-inspiring force of nature that is a storm, I sought to translate its energy into a wearable form. The swirling tornado, structured using wire and volumized with repurposed down from my discarded bed comforter, winds its way through the garment, with the intent of evoking a sense of electrifying movement and vitality.
